Bodegas Vega Sicilia has produced the finest quality wines for over 150 years. Founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves it is responsible for some of the most coveted and collected Spanish wine in the world. Located in Ribera del Duero, Vega Sicilia is one of Spain’s most prestigious wine estates. Its founder brought cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot grapes from Bordeaux and planted them with region’s indigenous Tempranillo.
Following his death, Vega Sicilia had various owners before being acquired by legendary winemaker Domingo Garramiola Txomin in the early 1900s. It was he who produced the very first vintage of Vega Sicilia wine that we hold in such esteem today. After its 1917 and 1918 Vega Sicilia Unico vintages scooped prizes at the 1929 World’s Fair in Barcelona, its reputation burgeoned. Don Pablo Alvarez forged Vega Sicilia’s global reputation in the 1980s and early 1990s and the rest is history.
Basco is proud to stock some of the most exceptional styles and vintages of Vega Sicilia wine. The most famous is Vega Sicilia Unico – the 2013 vintage we stock is their ‘Grand Cru Classe’ or ‘First Growth’ – a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes which are aged for a minimum of 6 years. Fruity, complex and elegant with a deep intensely fruity aroma, it has superb ageing potential and is perfect with served with beef, lamb, or game dishes. Our Vega Sicilia Valbuena 5° 2018 vintage is a classic Spanish red which is ready to drink but also has the potential to age 25 years – it is particularly delicious enjoyed with red meats, game and bellota ham.
Vega Sicilia Pintia 2018 is an elegant yet intense 100% Tempranillo with aromas and flavours of spice, cedar and black fruit. It is perfect served with Castillian milk-fed lamb or suckling pig. Aged for 12 months, Vega Sicilian Alión 2019 is from the sister estate of Vega Sicilia. This modern 100% Tempranillo is rich, fruity and has plenty of spice with wonderfully spicy and slightly smoky aromas. Our fifth and final Vega Sicilia wine is actually a collaboration with Benjamin de Rothschild. Vega Sicilia Macán Clásico 2019 is one of Rioja’s finest wines. 100% Tempranillo, it has a complex flavour of dark fruit, vanilla, and spice with aromas of blackberries, black licorice, violets and crushed stones
The original Vega Sicilia estate is in Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen in the Province of Valladolid, Castile and León in northern Spain. Since being acquired by the Alverez family in 1982, Vega Sicilia has expanded its portfolio to include another four estates. Alión in Ribero del Duero, Pintía in nearby Toro, Macan in Rioja and Tokaj-Oremus in Hungary.
The estate’s 210 hectares of vines are divided into three varieties: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvigon and Merlot. 140 acres are used to prepare Vega Sicilia Valbuena and Vega Sicilia Unico, and the remainder for Vega Sicilia Alión. The vineyard comprises 52 different winemaking plots depending on the grape variety, age of the vines and 19 soil types.
General manager Pablo Alvarez is absolutely fastidious about the way Vega Sicilia produces its wine. Living in harmony with nature, the vineyard applies low yields, aided by green harvesting and a painstaking selection of grapes at harvest time. No chemical treatments are used – all fertilisation, herbicide treatment, pest and disease control are carried out using organic farming techniques.
Its wines are aged in a variety of barrels and vats made from new and old French and American oak. This is what gives Vega Sicilia wines their integrity and complexity. The highest quality grapes, along with long barrel ageing ensures that the fruit is never dried out or over-oaky.
“Fantastic. Aroma of spiced plum, dusty gravel, prune, potpourri and caramel on the nose.
Excellent structure with powerful tannins and rounded acidity.
Dense and flavourful palate of fresh plum, black cherry pie, oak and dark chocolate.
Long grippy finish. This is a wine built for ageing.”

“Smashing. So good. Super refined nose – had the nose of a wine much older than this. Loads of black fruits, vanilla, oak, leather and bramble on the nose.
Very smooth – velvet. Medium full body.
Palate matched the nose somewhat, with more oak and vanilla coming through, as well as cedar, cherry and tobacco smoke with a bit of balsamic reduction and forest floor.
Good long finish. Epic wine. Drank it in a little tapas and wine bar in Barcelona at such a steal. Felt very lucky to find this.”

“This 2019 is just beyond superb and just as the 2017 and 2018 I rated.
I believe this is the pinnacle of perfection in Spanish Ribera Del Duero.
Not to be missed.”

“This dark violet-coloured wine has aromas of cranberry, milk chocolate and rose.
Milk chocolate transitions to the tastebuds and is accompanied by black cherry, blackberry, violet and orange-zest flavours.
A layer of velvety tannins lingers on the tongue and gums.”

“Excellent Toro red from Pintia, a Vega Sicilia winery.
What a fantastic wine! Definitely in my top 10 wines.
Deep purple tone, very complex and full bodied with strong yet smooth tannins.
Absolutely amazing aromas, explosion of plum, backed by some leather and a rich earthen aroma to close it off. Feeling continues in the mouth with a long, balanced finish, with hints of oak.
Top tier wine, highly recommended.”
