    CVNE Wine

CVNE wine, often called the more pronouncable Cune wine, is the initialism for the famous Spanish winemaker Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España. One of the oldest wine groups in Spain, CVNE is based in the town and municipality of Haro in northwest Rioja, the self-proclaimed capital of Rioja.

Basco is an admirer of CVNE wine and we have carefully selected and stock five of their best Riojas – Viña Gran Reserva Especial, Imperial Gran Reserva, Imperial Reserva and Contino Reserva are the four reds plus two classic whites Monopole Blanco and Monopole Clasico Reserva.

    The CVNE Family

Eight wineries operate under family-run CVNE – CVNE, Imperial, Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino in Rioja, Roger Goulart in Penedés, Bela in Ribera del Duero, Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras and La Val in Rías Baixas.

Founded the Real de Asúa brothers in 1879 in Haro, it is controlled today by the direct descendants of the founding family and producing quality, artisanal and traditional wines that grace tables in more than 90 countries. Today, CVNE’s extended family has come together to make a winery that has successfully remains faithful to its roots and traditions for over 140 years.

    History of the CVNE Winery

Within just six years of being founded in 1885, CVNE wine won the first of many international awards. An industry leader in Spain, CVNE wine is a winner of prestigious wine awards including accolades from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate over the course of its illustrious history.

Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) stands by the iconic Barrio de la Estación railway station. Interestingly, Aleixandre Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, designed the CVNE cellar around the turn of the 19th century. The original cellar was fully restored in 2007.

The CVNE winery has a long history of innovation. It was the first winery to use gravity in the fermentation process which is still used at the CVNE, Imperial and Viña Real wineries. Contino is the first ever single-vineyard wine, whilst in 1915, Monopole became the first white wine brand to be registered in Spain.

    The Making of CVNE Wine

CVNE is a young, professional and united team that has achieved worldwide recognition for CVNE wines and wineries. These wineries produce a wide variety of wines – the best from each region – and combine tradition and modern techniques to create reliable and really characterful award-winning wines.

CVNE’s century-old wineries, historic vineyards and native grape varieties are united by a common trait: sharing a culture of excellence in the art of winemaking. Much of Cune wine is made in either French or American oak vats and aged with care to create their distinctive nuances.

    Environment and Sustainability

The environment and sustainability are important priorities for all Cune wine wineries. María Urrutia, Director and 5th generation of the founding family of CVNE explains:

“As a company committed to our environment and to the world in which we live, we must fight to reduce CO2 emissions with specific plans throughout the production chain; share and work as a team so that all the wineries follow the same line and we can leave a new legacy that combines tradition and sustainability.”

    Imperial Gran Reserva

This iconic Rioja was born in the 1920s and is only made in exceptional vintage years and is designed to last and improve over time.

This fabulous flagship Cune red wine was ranked “World’s Best Wine” in 2013 by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator – the first ever Spanish wine to receive the accolade.

Made with 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo grapes, Imperial Gran Reserva has a deep ruby colour and cherry notes. Complex with aromas of compote fruit, liquorice, light vanillas, toffee and chocolate with spice and balsamic from ageing.

Imperial Gran Reserva has a silky-smooth palate, well-defined tannins and a long pleasant finish. Pair with grilled red meats, game, oily fish and cured cheeses.

    Imperial Reserva

Fine, precise and powerful, this wonderful Cune red wine, like Imperial Gran Reserva, is only produced in years with outstanding harvests.

Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha grapes from Villalba, Briones and Torremontalvo vineyards combine to create Imperial Reserva. It possesses a deep garnet colour with blue hints.

Its nose has fascinating aromas of wild berries, liquorice, toffee, tobacco and undergrowth from barrel ageing. The palate is elegant with depth and fine velvety tannins. The finish of Imperial Reserva is long and complex. Pair with grilled red meats, casseroles and stews, cured cheeses and charcuterie.

    Contino Reserva

Born in 1973, Contino Reserva established the “château” concept in the Rioja region. This Contino wine is made exclusively with 86% Tempranillo plus Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha grapes from the vines planted on the 62-hectare estate in Laserna, near the village of Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa winemaking region. This is also the home of the famous Contino Gran Reserva.

Made from the grapes of micro-vineyards, this Contino Rioja Reserva has excellent potential to develop over time and has a nose reminiscent of black fruit notes, candied rose and incense, well balanced with its oak ageing. On the palate, it is a fluid, silky wine and has a lovely long, lingering finish.

Pair Contino wine with grilled meats, especially milk-fed lamb, casseroles and stews, cured cheeses and charcuterie.

    Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial

One of the great classics of Rioja Alavesa, has excellent ageing potential and has received 95 points from Robert Parker, Tim Atkin and James Suckling.

Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial is produced using 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano grapes from Laguardia, Elceco, Labastida and the winery’s own vineyards, such as San Ginés and Castejones.

This CVNE wine is aged in new single-use barrels for an average of 24 months and racked manually. Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial is a vivid ruby red Cune Rioja wine with an intense and complex nose.

Its barrel ageing brings notes of coffee, spices, toast and balsamic with ripe red, black and dried fruits. Smooth and unctuous on the mouth, it has an intense, fresh long-lasting finish with sweet tannins. Pair with grilled red meats, game, oily fish and cured cheeses.

    Monopole Blanco

One of Spain’s most classic of wines, this white Rioja is the first white wine brand registered in Spain in 1915. CVNE have been producing Monopole in Haro since the beginning of the 20th century and it is now a benchmark in households and hospitality. Monopole’s French name – which originates in Napoleonic times – indicates it comes from a single vineyard.

This classic white Rioja is made from hand-tended and harvested 100% Rioja Alta Viura grapes from head-trained vines in fresh, clay soils. Monopole Blanco is a delightful pale yellow wine with a pleasingly intense aroma of white currant, apple and pear with notes of banana and pineapple.

This white Rioja starts smoothly on the palate, is long mid-palate and ends with a touch of acidity and a fresh fruity and floral aftertaste. Serve 8ºC between 10ºC with starters, appetizers, fish and seafood.

    Monopole Clasico Reserva

This aged white wine harks back to the Monopoles of a bygone era. Monopole Clásico is crafted from grapes grown in Villalba de Rioja, a 5-hectare vineyard with 15-year-old vines rooted in calcareous soils at over 600 meters above sea level. The trellised vines, facing east, are hand-harvested into 20 kg boxes.

After gentle pressing, the must undergoes static clarification in concrete tanks, a nod to 1960s traditions. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, followed by 8 months of aging on fine lees in barrels and casks of 300–500 liters, previously used for other wines, with regular tastings.
