WINE TASTING
Viña Real dates back to 1920. Today this winery is not only a winemaking pioneer in ageing Rioja Alavesa but a timeless brand that has always remained faithful to its roots, with authenticity and sincerity at the fore.
Ever since then, a meticulous balance between tradition and modernity has defined the shape and content of Viña Real.
2004 saw the inauguration of the new Viña Real winery in Laguardia, where the whole process takes place from receiving the grapes to dispatching bottled wines.
Rioja Alavesa grapes are at the very heart of this winery. The winery’s name was inspired by the proximity of its vineyards to the old Camino Real. Clinging to this same patch of earth and blending into the Cerro de la Mesa hill is a monumental 30,000-square metre vat: this is the Viña Real building, an iconic design built in 2004 that masterfully blends the construction into the Riojan terrain.
Ageing of Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial is carried out in new single-use barrels, where the wine remains for an average of 24 months, with manual racking taking place every 4 months in the first year and less regularly in the second year. The wine is clarified prior to bottling to achieve a cleaner, smoother and glossier product. Once in the bottle, the desired roundness will be acquired within a minimum of 3 years. It will reach its prime many years later.
Vivid and bright ruby-red in colour with garnet rims and high colour layer. Very intense and complex on nose highlighting notes from its barrel ageing (coffee, spices, toasted and balsamic) well combined with aromas of ripe red and black fruits and dried fruits.
A very smooth, unctuous wine in the mouth, evolving towards an intense, structured and long-lasting finisgh with a certain acidity that gives its freshness. At all times a sweet tannin is appreciated, perfectly integrated. It will evolve very positively in the bottle, having a long life ahead.
FOOD PAIRING.
This is the perfect partner to grilled red meats, game, oily fish and cured cheeses.

The Source
Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (C.V.N.E.)
In 1879, the Real de Asúa brothers arrived in Haro to embark on what would become one of the longest-standing histories in the wine world. A trip initially taken for health reasons led to the creation of Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (C.V.N.E.) in the iconic Barrio de la Estación railway station.
This marked the birth of a family winery that has grown over five generations. Today, the winery is still run by the same family, producing quality, artisanal and traditional wines that grace tables in more than 90 countries. An industry leader in Spain and winner of prestigious wine awards including accolades from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate over the course of its history, CVNE has continued to grow while always remaining true to its objective of creating premium wines and tapping into the potential of the outstanding vineyards in its environs. The group currently has eight wineries in Spain’s principal wine-growing regions: CVNE, Imperial, Viña Real and Viñedos del Contino in Rioja, Roger Goulart in Penedés, Bela in Ribera del Duero, Virgen del Galir in Valdeorras and La Val in Rías Baixas.
